Orange Street

This guide to Orange Street in Osaka's Horie district starts in the 1980s, with a once-busy row of family furniture shops emptying out as suburban megastores and changing tastes took their customers. It follows the shopkeepers' own children, set to inherit stores nobody wanted, as they banded into an activation committee in 1991 rather than watch the street die. Their first move was a newspaper contest that drew over a thousand entries for a new nickname, a wink at the citrus fruit tachibana.
