Via Giuseppe Garibaldi

This guide to Via Giuseppe Garibaldi in Venice follows a filled-in canal turned boulevard, and the house near its far end where a Venetian merchant named Giovanni Caboto once lived. It traces his path from an unrewarded citizen of the Republic to an English-backed captain sailing under Henry the Seventh as John Cabot, and the small ship called the Matthew that carried him and fewer than twenty men across the Atlantic in 1497. The street itself now carries a different name, borrowed from a revolutionary who arrived generations later.
