Gallerie d’Italia

Gallerie d'Italia in Milan starts underground, behind a steel-plated vault door built for the Banca Commerciale Italiana in the early 1900s by architect Luca Beltrami, who also restored the Sforza Castle. It walks through what the room used to hold, rows of safety deposit boxes watched over by two Doric columns, before turning to how it became a gallery: around five hundred paintings from the Intesa Sanpaolo collection now hang on sliding steel mesh panels set exactly where the boxes used to be. Walk between the two columns and pull the panels out one at a time to see what each one is hiding.
