Ha'penny Bridge

This guide to the Ha'penny Bridge in Dublin opens on a Tuesday morning in 1916, as armed rebels come marching across the bridge toward the toll man's turnstile, who has no idea a rebellion is about to erupt. It traces the bridge's origin back to 1816 and the ferryman William Walsh, who built it in exchange for the right to keep charging his old ferry fare for a hundred years. For a century, the fare to cross this arch of cast iron over the Liffey had been exactly one half of a penny, paid through turnstiles at either end.
