St Stephen's Green

This guide to St Stephen's Green in Dublin returns to Easter Monday 1916, when Irish Citizen Army fighters under Michael Mallin and Countess Constance Markievicz marched in and dug trenches across the lawns, certain that holding the green meant holding the city. It follows the park keeper, James Kearney, who kept walking out twice a day to feed the ducks even as the shooting continued around him. The square itself had only been public since 1880, when Arthur Guinness, Lord Ardilaun, paid to landscape it and gave it to the city as a gift.
