Mount Batur

Mount Batur's guide starts in 1917, when lava flowing down this volcano stopped at the gates of Pura Ulun Danu Batur, the temple built for the lake's goddess. Nine years later the mountain erupted again, burying the village of Batur and forcing priests to carry statues and relics uphill through smoke and ash. The narration follows how the temple was rebuilt shrine by shrine, higher on the caldera rim, as villagers decided where lava could never reach again.
