Hospital in the Rock

This guide to Hospital in the Rock in Budapest opens on the winter of 1944 and 1945, when the siege of Budapest sent six hundred wounded into a cave hospital built for sixty-five beds, deep beneath Buda Castle. It follows the doctors and nurses who worked by generator light, reused old bandages and, when food ran out, slaughtered horses for meat, while the dead were carried out at night to fresh bomb craters.
