Šulić

This guide to Šulić beach in Dubrovnik starts inside a stonecutter's workshop cut into the cliff below Fort Lovrijenac, back when this cove held no beach at all under the old Republic of Ragusa. It follows the trade's slow collapse in the mid-1800s and the Šulić family, who bought the abandoned quarry near the century's end and set out to remake it by hand, without architects or a plan. Their owners had sold up and walked away from rock they had spent lifetimes carving, leaving the inlet empty until the family took it on.
