Pile Gate

This guide to Pile Gate in Dubrovnik follows two carved statues of Saint Blaise standing just a few steps apart, one on the outer Renaissance tower raised around 1537 and one on the inner Gothic arch from around 1460, and asks which one is really the old face weathered by sea wind. It also traces the stone bridge beneath your feet, engineered in 1471 by Paskoje Miličević over what was once a seawater moat, and the nightly ritual of hauling up a drawbridge and locking the city key in the Rector's own bedroom. Stand on the bridge and look up at both saints before you guess which is genuinely ancient.
