House of Marin Držić

This guide to the House of Marin Držić in Dubrovnik follows the comic playwright whose plays once packed the street outside the Rector's Palace, and the grudge he carried against the same nobles who applauded him. By 1566 he was writing from Florence to Cosimo de Medici, asking the duke to help him topple Dubrovnik's own senate and hand power to ordinary citizens. He later told Florentine officials he had simply stayed in the city for four months, for fun, before dying in Venice within roughly a year.
