This guide to Bunićeva poljana in Dubrovnik opens in 1192, with Richard the Lionheart convinced he was drowning in an Adriatic storm on his way home from the Third Crusade, and the vow he made to God in that moment. It follows him ashore on Lokrum, and the Dubrovnik officials who talked him into redirecting his promised church toward the city itself rather than the island. A Cambridge scholar who studied the story later called the evidence for it merely circumstantial, though Dubrovnik began building anyway in 1199.
