Cimetière du Père-Lachaise

This guide to Pere-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris opens in 1804, when the newly opened hillside cemetery held just thirteen graves and Parisians wanted nothing to do with it. It follows the elaborate scheme administrators staged in 1817, parading what they claimed were the remains of Moliere and La Fontaine to draw the crowds who made the cemetery famous.
