Château de la Brede

At Chateau de la Brede outside Bordeaux, the guide opens with a January 1689 baptism: a newly ennobled family choosing one of the poorest men in the parish to be their infant son's godfather, a deliberate lesson rather than an accident. That child grew up to be Montesquieu, and the guide walks the moated walls, drawbridges and thirteenth-century keep he knew before climbing to the library his father built for him. Along the way it lingers on a 2013 restoration that uncovered medieval knights painted beneath later coats of paint, still riding the walls of the room where he worked.
