Setas de Sevilla

This guide to Setas de Sevilla follows a market square that lost its building in 1973, then lost its emptiness in 1990 when workers digging a parking garage struck Roman mosaics and Moorish walls beneath the paving. It traces the decade of archaeology that followed, and the 2004 design competition that picked German architect Jurgen Mayer's plan to roof the plaza in curved, honeycombed timber over sixty-four other entries. Under the canopy today, around forty market stalls still sell fish, fruit and cheese on the ground floor.
