Santo Domingo Bridge (Germans Bridge)

This guide to the Santo Domingo Bridge in Málaga, also called the Germans Bridge, opens with a measurement puzzle over the iron span beneath your feet. It reaches back to the sixteenth of December, 1900, when a violent storm drove the German frigate Gneisenau onto the rocks at the harbor mouth, and to the fishermen of El Bulto and Pedregalejo who waded into the surf to pull survivors out, several dying in the attempt. Word of their rescue reached Berlin, where Málaga earned an honor still on the city's coat of arms. Seven years later a flood tore through the Guadalmedina and swept the original bridge away.
