Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas de San Ildefonso

This guide to the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas de San Ildefonso in Madrid follows Miguel de Cervantes from his capture by Barbary pirates and years enslaved in Algiers, through his ransom by the Trinitarian friars, to his burial among them in 1616. It traces how the original chapel was later torn down and his bones lost track of for nearly four centuries, mixed unmarked into a shared crypt with sixteen other people. A forensic team led by Francisco Etxeberria began digging beneath this building in 2015.
