Realejo-San Matias

This guide walks Realejo-San Matias in Granada, the old silk-and-leather quarter that filled the lanes left empty after the city's Jewish community was expelled in 1492. It follows the guild workers, dyers, cobblers and tanners who moved in, the sixteen-hundreds silk boom that dressed half of Spain, and a local nickname Granada still uses for a Realejo native. Guild inspectors weighed and sealed every skein before it could move on, silk here being valuable enough to regulate and tempting enough to fake.
