Alcázar Genil

This guide to Alcazar Genil in Granada opens on the morning of Eid al-Fitr in 1309, when a mob tore through Granada's palaces after killing the vizier who had ruled in place of the blind sultan Muhammad III. It follows the deposed sultan as he is brought under guard to this pleasure palace beside the river Genil, built by his own dynasty for parties, its vast pool once staged mock naval battles for guests. His half-brother Nasr took the throne in his place, and later fell dangerously ill. Stand where that pool once stretched, now replaced by a modern road.
