Cascada del Parc de la Ciutadella

This guide to the Cascada del Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona opens with a broke young architecture student hired in the 1870s to work out the hydraulics buried beneath this public fountain, years before anyone called him Gaudi. It follows the fountain's disappointing 1881 debut and the seven-year rebuild that piled on mythological statues and a gilded chariot ahead of the 1888 Universal Exhibition.
