Frederiksberg Slot

This guide to Frederiksberg Slot in Copenhagen centers on a marble bathtub built into the basement in the early 1770s, meant to calm a young king's unraveling mind but left almost unused. It follows court physician Johann Friedrich Struensee, who built the bathing room, and the king's teenage bride Caroline Mathilde, married off from England at fifteen, as the two grew closer than a doctor and patient should. The stair down to that basement room was narrow, and by some accounts the king himself was simply afraid of the dark.
