Siegestor

This guide to the Siegestor in Munich follows a 1945 demolition order for the war-damaged gate, and the choice postwar city leaders faced when the order was never carried out. It traces King Ludwig the First's original arch, built in the 1840s after Rome's Arch of Constantine and crowned with a bronze Bavaria driving four lions, through the bombing that toppled them into the street below.
