Museum of Man and Nature

This guide to the Museum of Man and Nature in Munich starts in May 2006, when a young brown bear swam across the border from Austria and became the first wild bear to set foot in Germany in over a century and a half. It follows the animal Bavarian officials nicknamed Problem Bear Number One, born into a European project to bring bears back to the Alps, as he wandered north raiding beehives, killing livestock, and outrunning trackers from three countries for weeks. Newspapers covered him as half folk hero, half fugitive, for the whole chase.
