Asamkirche

This guide to the Asamkirche in Munich centers on the brothers Egid Quirin and Cosmas Damian Asam, a sculptor and a painter who built this church themselves in the 1730s as their own private chapel, with no bishop and no client to answer to, squeezed into a gap barely eight meters wide. It follows what they filled the tiny space with once nothing was left to constrain them, and the private window cut into the sculptor's own house next door. Stand near that window on your left as you listen, and look up at the painted ceiling above.
