Millerntor-Stadion

This guide to Millerntor-Stadion in Hamburg follows a homemade skull-and-crossbones flag hoisted over the terraces in the 1980s by a man known as Doc Mabuse, part of a wave of punks, students and squatters from the nearby Hafenstrasse houses who found watching a struggling lower-league club a strangely good way to make a point. It traces how chants turned into protest songs and a scrappy symbol became the ground's whole identity, no boardroom decision behind any of it. Somewhere under the pitch, workers once dug up unexploded wartime bombs, and the stadium simply carried on.
