This guide to Britzer Garten in Berlin opens in December 1978, when a construction senator's ceremonial tree-planting to launch the garden show was found hacked down the very next morning, with suspicion falling on the small-plot gardeners just evicted from the land. It follows the project's runaway budget under architect Wolfgang Miller, and the roughly 875,000 cubic metres of earth crews moved to carve a lake and raise hills where generations of gardeners once grew vegetables and roses.
