Church of Jesus of Miramar

This guide to the Church of Jesus of Miramar in Havana opens with a puzzle: why did the congregation pray for six years under an unfinished ceiling after the building was declared complete in 1953. It follows the Spanish painter Cesareo Marciano Hombrados, who kept adding murals long after the doors opened, and the craftsman Guillermo de Aizpuru Egiguren, who built Cuba's largest pipe organ using salvaged pipes from a demolished Havana movie house. Stand beneath the dome and look for the fourteen large murals overhead, more than two hundred figures painted across the nave and ceiling.
