Centenario Park

This guide to Centenario Park in Cartagena opens with a question at the base of the obelisk: why does a monument built to mark a finished revolution still look unfinished. It follows Luis Felipe Jaspe Franco, a self-taught surveyor and photographer already responsible for the city's clock tower and market, as he took on the park in 1907 to mark a century since independence from Spain and ran out of money before he ran out of vision. The park opened incomplete in 1911, its fountains dry and its statues waiting on money that never fully came, and Jaspe kept carving pieces of it by hand for the rest of his life.
