Zhejiang Art Museum

This guide to the Zhejiang Art Museum in Hangzhou opens with a 2016 shipment of more than five hundred seventy paintings, sketches, diaries and carved seals, the estate of painter Fu Juanfu, who spent decades in the United States before his family chose to give it all to Hangzhou rather than sell it. It traces why the museum can rarely buy art on its own budget, and follows how painter Wu Guanzhong and a collector in Taipei each decided to hand over their own valuable canvases instead of cashing in on them. Wu Guanzhong alone gave forty of his own paintings, plus sixteen more by his teachers and friends.
