Sculpture Park Museum

This guide to Sculpture Park Museum in Santiago begins on a Mapocho riverbank left scarred and muddy after a violent 1982 flood tore out the gardens that once lined it, and the strange bet a handful of artists and city officials made to turn the wreckage into a free open-air stage for sculpture. It follows sculptor Marta Colvin, who knelt beside a block of red stone to carve Pachamama, the very first piece set into the ground when the park opened in December 1986. Four other winners of Chile's National Art Prize, including Federico Assler and Lily Garafulic, later added their own work to the lawns and paths.
