MAC Museum of Contemporary Art

This guide to the MAC Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago traces the building back to architect Emilio Jecquier, who finished its Belgian glass dome in 1910 as a gift marking the Chilean republic's centennial, modeled on Paris's Petit Palais. It follows the 1969 fire that gutted the dome and the young museum that kept working under a hole in its own roof, then the 1985 earthquake that cracked the walls shut for years. Architect Claudio Navarrete led the eventual rebuilding effort, working from little more than old photographs of what had been lost.
