Wasserkirche

This guide to the Wasserkirche in Zurich opens with a puzzle: Huldrych Zwingli spent the 1520s tearing statues and organs out of the city's churches, so why does his bronze statue stand watch right outside this one. It traces the site's legend of the martyrs Felix and Regula, beheaded and said to have carried their own severed heads uphill, the late Gothic church built over their shrine by 1486, and Zwingli's sermons at the Grossmunster that turned the council against religious images. You can still walk down into the crypt and see the stone pilgrims once pointed to as where it happened.
