Lindenhof

This guide to Lindenhof in Zurich starts at the fountain statue overlooking the square: a bronze woman in chain mail and helmet that every visitor assumes is a knight, though she never held a real weapon and the battle she's dressed for never happened. According to legend, her name was Hedwig ab Burghalden, and in 1292, with Zurich's men away fighting at Winterthur, an Austrian duke marched on the undefended city. The women left behind gathered armor and lances and marched up this very hill, beating drums and waving flags.
