This guide to Atwater Market in Saint-Henri, Montreal, opens with a boast: architects said the market's third floor could hold ten thousand people, an odd claim for a hall meant to sell turnips and pork chops. Built in 1933 under Mayor Camillien Houde as a Depression-era public-works project, the Art Deco market got that claim tested nine years later, when a rally against military conscription packed the hall and spilled onto Atwater Avenue.
