In 2013 a man was found dead on the tiled staircase he had spent twenty-three years covering by hand, and this Lapa guide opens with that unresolved death before going back to how it all started. You'll hear how Jorge Selaron, a Chilean-born painter who had already wandered through more than fifty countries, decided in 1990 to fix a crumbling flight of steps himself, funding the work by selling thousands of his own paintings. It follows the tiles he scavenged and the ones tourists began mailing him from their own countries.
