Fitzroy

This guide to Fitzroy in Melbourne follows Gertrude Street back to the Builders Arms, for years nearly the only hotel willing to serve an Aboriginal customer at the bar, and to the more than three hundred Aboriginal people who settled in the suburb's terrace houses by the 1950s. It traces Doug and Gladys Nicholls, who began running services out of a modest building on Gore Street in 1943, and the club a young Lin Onus later ran nearby through the 1960s.
