St. Peter's Abbey

This guide to St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg follows the abbot Kilian Puttricher, hunched over a Latin manuscript in 1525, and a misread place name that fed a legend already forming around a bishop called Maximus and his companions, said to have hidden from Roman soldiers in the caves cut into the cliff above the cemetery. It traces what the historical record actually says became of that bishop, and what the caves were carved for long before Puttricher was born. Stand at the cliff face and look for the two dark chapel doorways still set into the rock.
