Franziskanerkirche

This guide to the Franziskanerkirche in Salzburg opens with a question: would you trust a design nobody had tried at this size. Around 1408, the Bavarian master builder Hans von Burghausen was hired to replace the choir of a dark, squat Romanesque nave, and instead of a safer, narrower plan he stretched the new choir to match the old nave's full width, resting it on a ring of unusually slender stone piers. Burghausen died in 1432 before finishing the job, and his journeyman Stephan Krumenauer carried the gamble forward, the two men later carved together into a pillar of the high choir.
