Chapter Square

This guide to Chapter Square in Salzburg starts with the horses that once drove archbishops, merchants and travelers through the Old Town, led here to drink at a working pond before any fountain stood in its place. It traces the square's rebuilding in 1732 under Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian into a baroque basin styled after Rome, complete with a sloped ramp for thirsty hooves and a sculpted Neptune riding a spouting seahorse. Two weathered Tritons flank him, salvaged from an even earlier well built in 1690, older than the god they now accompany.
