Independence Palace

This guide to Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City follows two tanks racing toward the same gates on the morning of April 30, 1975, and the decades-long mix-up over which one actually deserves the credit. Upstairs, it turns to a quieter scene: President Duong Van Minh, sworn in only two days earlier, waiting with his cabinet to hand over power to a young North Vietnamese officer. Along the way it reaches back to the palace this one replaced, bombed years before by two of its own air force pilots.
