de Young Museum

This guide to the de Young Museum in San Francisco opens with the violent end of Charles de Young, shot in his own newspaper office in 1880, and the second shooting that nearly claimed his brother Michael four years later. It follows Michael's response: throwing the city a world's fair in 1894 and saving its art building rather than tearing it down, the building that became this museum. Along the way it covers what became of that structure after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Look closely at the copper panels of the current facade as you listen.
