The Rosenbach

This guide to The Rosenbach in Philadelphia follows the artist Maurice Sendak, who visited this Delancey Place townhouse as a young, self-taught illustrator to study its rare illustrated books long before Where the Wild Things Are made him famous. In 1968 he struck a deal to send everything he created here, and for nearly fifty years the house held the largest collection of his work in the world. It also traces what happened once his own foundation later invoked that agreement, and points to other treasures under the same roof, including poet Marianne Moore's rebuilt Greenwich Village living room.
