Fairmount Water Works

This guide to Fairmount Water Works in Philadelphia opens with rower Jack Kelly, snubbed by England's Henley Regatta in 1920 for being a bricklayer, and follows him to Olympic gold in Antwerp against the very man who beat him at Henley. From there it traces the water works itself, a nineteenth-century pump house that doubled as Philadelphia's pleasure ground, with strolling gardens, ice skaters, and rowers on the Schuylkill below Boathouse Row. Kelly went on to chair the Fairmount Park Commission and serve as commodore of the Schuylkill Navy, the rowing clubs still visible just upstream.
