Norton Simon Museum

The Norton Simon Museum's guide follows two Lucas Cranach panels, Adam and Eve, bought by Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker in 1931 and seized after his death fleeing the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, the panels eventually landing in Hermann Goering's own collection. It traces them through postwar recovery, a sale to a Russian aristocrat, and industrialist Norton Simon's purchase in 1971, then the decades-long lawsuit brought by Goudstikker's daughter-in-law to reclaim them. The case reached the Supreme Court twice.
