California Science Center

This guide to the California Science Center in Los Angeles follows Space Shuttle Endeavour's four-day, twelve-mile crawl through city streets in October 2012, when crews rerouted power lines, lowered traffic signals and felled hundreds of trees to clear its wingspan. It lingers on a freeway bridge too weak for the shuttle's usual transporter, and the improvised solution engineers and a driver worked out to get nearly three hundred thousand pounds across it. Astronaut Garrett Reisman rode along for that stretch, and the city later replanted roughly a thousand trees.
