Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area

This guide to Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area in Honolulu opens in January 1895, when royalist rebel Robert Wilcox, once a foe of the Hawaiian monarchy and now fighting to restore Queen Liliuokalani, led a ragtag army cornered in Manoa Valley under government artillery fire. Under cover of darkness, the last of his men scrambled up this very ridge to escape. A century later, the same ground faced a very different kind of fight, over high-voltage transmission towers a power company wanted to string across it.
