Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout

This guide to the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout in Honolulu starts with a discovery in 1898, when road crews cutting through this mountain gap unearthed eight hundred skulls. It traces back to May 1795, when Kamehameha the First landed on Oahu with the largest army the islands had ever seen, something like twelve thousand men and over a thousand war canoes. Oahu's defenders, led by chief Kalanikupule, fell back up this same valley, fighting as they went, until the valley ran out of ground.
