Haleiwa

This guide to Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore follows two young Army lieutenants, George Welch and Kenneth Taylor, pulled from an all-night poker game in Waikiki on the morning of December 7, 1941, and racing to a grass airstrip here as Pearl Harbor came under attack. It also traces the town's plantation-era roots, when businessman Benjamin Dillingham built a hotel in 1898 and ran his own railroad up from Honolulu just to fill it.
