Dole Plantation

This guide to Dole Plantation in Honolulu connects two cousins: Sanford Dole, the lawyer who helped end the reign of Hawaii's last monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, in 1893, and James Dole, who arrived here in 1899 to grow pineapples and built a company that soon supplied most of the world's fruit. A simple fruit stand opened on this spot in 1950. It did not become a full public attraction until 1989, decades after the pineapple business itself had already made the family name here.
