Bishop Museum

This guide to the Bishop Museum in Honolulu follows Charles Reed Bishop, a New York clerk who married into Hawaii's royal family in 1850 against his in-laws' wishes, and his wife Bernice Pauahi, whose death left him the last direct heir to the Kamehameha line. He built these Romanesque stone halls with scientist William Brigham, filling them with feathered cloaks, whale skeletons and koa wood cases. Bishop sailed away from the islands for good after the 1893 overthrow of the kingdom and never really settled here again.
