Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park

This guide to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta opens with the sound of mule hooves on Auburn Avenue on April 9, 1968, as a plain farm wagon carried King's casket toward Morehouse College. It follows why he asked for a sharecropper's cart instead of a hearse, and the enormous crowd that spilled off sidewalks and climbed rooftops behind it. The guide reaches back to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was baptized, preached his first sermon, and later became co-pastor beside his father, and to Sweet Auburn, the once-thriving Black business district around it. Walk the avenue at the pace the mourners did, from the church toward the far end of the park.
